Become Carbon neutral

Carbon Neutral

At the Y's Men's International Council Meeting (ICM07) in Adelaide, Australia in July 2007, a Task Force was established to 'consider the implications and cost of becoming carbon neutral'.

The objective of the task for is to estimate the carbon emissions resulting from the operations of Y's Men International. It has been determined that this is predominantly due to travel of members. In particular the travel of leaders, but also the travel of members attending conventions, etc.

Becoming Carbon Neutral
Becoming carbon can be achieved in two ways:

1. Reduce carbon emissions,
2. Offset carbon emissions.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

1. Travel
a. Travel less. This can be achieved by using technology , for example video conference facilities for meetings.
b. Organise meetings at locations that require less travel on average.
c. Combine meetings.
d. Use public transport, for example train rather than car.
e. Co-ordinate multiple passengers in a car where possible.
2. Other
a. Purchase renewable energy power. The impact varies from country to country, because it depends on how the power is generated. If generated using hydro power stations, the impact is minimal. If power is generated using coal fired power stations the impact is much greater.
b. Use low energy light fittings.
c. Install solar hot water system.

Offset Carbon Emissions

Carbon offsets can be calculated and purchased from various sources. Links to some are provided here.
